Plastic pallets for storage, transport and export

Durable alternative to wooden pallets

Plastic pallets are the hygienic, robust and sustainable alternative to wooden pallets. They are suitable for storage, transport, export and reusable systems and are available in many formats and versions. Thanks to their high load capacity, weather resistance and long service life, they are ideal for industry and trade.

Plastic Pallets – the Durable and Sustainable Alternative to Wooden Pallets

Plastic pallets have become an essential part of modern logistics and production environments. As a robust, hygienic and low-maintenance alternative to conventional wooden pallets, they are now established across virtually every industry – from food and pharmaceuticals to automotive supply chains and export logistics. Plastic Union offers plastic pallets in all common formats and designs, covering both standardised requirements and demanding custom solutions.

What Are Plastic Pallets?

Plastic pallets are load carriers made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene (PP) and are manufactured by injection moulding or compression moulding. Unlike wooden pallets, they are dimensionally stable, splinter-free, non-absorbent and recyclable. They are used as single-use pallets, also known as export pallets, or as reusable pallets within closed-loop systems.

Typical designs include:

Runner Pallets

Equipped with three continuous runners and suitable for handling with forklifts and pallet trucks. Ideal for heavy-duty applications and use in automated warehouse systems.

Flat Pallets / Racking Pallets

Designed with nine feet or a block-style base and suitable for use in high-bay warehouses and conveyor systems.

Hygiene Pallets

Featuring a closed surface that is easy to clean and disinfect, these pallets are specifically designed for food-processing and pharmaceutical operations.

Export Pallets

Lightweight single-use pallets for international shipping that are not subject to the phytosanitary treatment requirements of ISPM 15.

Advantages of Plastic Pallets over Wooden Pallets

Switching from wood to plastic offers benefits in many areas – not only in terms of hygiene, but also economically and logistically.

Hygiene and cleanability: Plastic pallets do not absorb moisture, do not produce mould spores and can be cleaned and disinfected mechanically. This is particularly important for companies operating under HACCP requirements or GMP guidelines.

Durability and stability: When used correctly, a high-quality plastic pallet can remain in service for ten years or longer. Its service life can therefore be significantly longer than that of wooden pallets, which may become splintered, deformed or prone to breakage after only a limited number of cycles.

Weight reduction: Plastic export pallets in particular are considerably lighter than wooden Euro pallets and can noticeably reduce shipping weight.

No phytosanitary treatment required: Wooden pallets used for international export may need to be heat-treated or fumigated in accordance with ISPM 15. Plastic pallets are not subject to these requirements, providing a significant logistical and cost advantage.

Dimensional stability: Plastic pallets do not warp as a result of changing moisture levels. Their dimensions remain consistent, which is important for automated conveyor systems and palletising equipment.

Recyclability: At the end of their service life, plastic pallets made from single-polymer PE or PP can be melted down and recycled.

Industries and Applications

Plastic pallets are used wherever hygiene, dimensional accuracy, load-bearing performance or international logistics are important.

Food Industry

Packaging lines, cold stores, clean production areas and food retailers use hygiene pallets with closed deck surfaces. They can support HACCP-based processes and are easy to integrate into existing cleaning procedures.

Pharmaceuticals and Medical Technology

Wooden pallets are often not permitted in GMP-regulated environments. Plastic pallets provide the required traceability, cleanability and resistance to cleaning agents and disinfectants.

Automotive Industry and Suppliers

The automotive industry operates with tightly scheduled just-in-time systems. Plastic pallets provide the dimensional accuracy and stability required for automated conveyor and warehouse technology.

Chemical and Hazardous Materials Industries

Chemical-resistant PE plastic pallets are suitable for transporting and storing containers, drums and IBCs. Combined with suitable spill containment pallets, they can form safe storage solutions that comply with applicable WHG requirements.

Export Logistics

For international shipping by sea or air freight, plastic single-use pallets offer an economical solution that is not subject to ISPM 15 wood-treatment requirements.

Technical Specifications and Load Capacity Classes

When selecting the correct plastic pallet, three load capacity values are particularly important:

Dynamic load capacity – the maximum load when the pallet is being transported by forklift or pallet truck. Typical values range from 1,000 to 6,000 kg, depending on the design.

Static load capacity – the maximum load when the pallet remains stationary, for example in block storage. This is generally significantly higher than the dynamic load capacity.

Racking load capacity – the load a pallet can support when it rests on only two bearing lines, such as rack beams. This value is essential when selecting pallets for use in high-bay racking.

All technical specifications are listed in the relevant product data sheets. For advice on selecting the appropriate load capacity class for your application, our team will be pleased to provide technical support.

Available Formats from Plastic Union

We supply plastic pallets in all common industrial formats:

800 × 600 mm – half-Euro format, ideal for small load carrier systems and picking warehouses

800 × 800 mm – square format for specialised conveyor systems and custom applications

1200 × 800 mm – Euro format, the most widely used standard in the DACH region

1200 × 1000 mm – industrial format for chemicals, automotive applications and Anglo-American markets

1140 × 1140 mm – suitable for the Australian market, selected American applications and the chemical industry

Custom-built solutions – individual dimensions, special constructions and customer-specific requirements

Custom Solutions and Special Designs

Standard formats cover most requirements, but not all of them. Plastic Union provides advice on selecting the appropriate design and can develop custom-made solutions on request, including special dimensions, reinforced load capacity classes, specific materials and colours for product identification within reusable systems.
